P0 City Readiness Guide
Beijing First-Day Readiness Guide
A practical Beijing arrival and first-day guide to help you handle PEK, PKX, metro, ride-hailing, payment backup, Palace Museum booking, Great Wall logistics, and Chinese address cards.
Who this city guide is for
Best for
- Your first China trip
- History and culture trips
- Great Wall and Forbidden City planning
First 24 hours
- Test mobile data before leaving the airport.
- Make one small payment test with Alipay or WeChat Pay and keep cash backup.
- Save hotel name, Chinese address, and phone number as an address card.
- Confirm the nearest metro station and the route back to the hotel.
- Check Palace Museum, Great Wall, or other booking-sensitive plans before sleeping.

Entry Handoff
Check the entry path before the city plan depends on it
City guidance does not decide ordinary visa-free, mutual exemption, 240-hour transit, or 24-hour direct transit results.
- Beijing is a multi-port city; use the exact airport or port shown on the ticket before drawing any entry conclusion.
- If you are using transit visa-free, confirm route before China, route after China, onward ticket, port, and permitted-area rules in the Entry Readiness Wizard.
- This city guide gives arrival context only and does not decide visa-free eligibility.
Arrival Playbook
Confirm whether your flight lands at PEK or PKX before booking a hotel transfer, because the two airports sit on different sides of Beijing. Save your hotel name, full Chinese address, and phone number before leaving arrivals.
- At PEK or PKX, look for official taxi, airport express, airport bus, metro, or designated ride-hailing pickup signs instead of accepting unsolicited rides.
- If you are carrying heavy luggage or arriving late, choose an official taxi or DiDi/ride-hailing pickup zone and show the driver a Chinese hotel address card.
- If you want predictable traffic-free travel, use the airport express or metro, then switch to taxi/DiDi only for the final hotel segment.
- For Palace Museum days, keep your passport with you and verify booking or email reservation details before leaving the hotel.
- For Great Wall trips, decide the section and transport plan the day before; avoid assuming a normal city taxi will be the easiest round trip.

Evidence Reviewed
What the public evidence can and cannot prove.
Screenshot reviewed
Beijing's official new-arrivals transport guide includes step-by-step visual guidance for DiDi ordering, driver contact, quick messages, payment, metro QR codes, buses, and shared bikes.
- DiDi and Alipay transport setup can be prepared before arrival
- driver call/message and payment screens are explicit checkpoints
- Chinese destination details remain necessary because drivers and staff may not speak English
- Does not prove the current app version, account state, card issuer, or phone number will work for every visitor
- Does not verify PEK or PKX pickup-zone signage in person
- Does not replace official taxi or staffed-help fallback paths

Screenshot reviewed
Beijing official reporting describes overseas Visa and Mastercard tap-to-ride at fare gates, a passenger using an overseas card at Caoqiao station, airport payment consulting centers, and POS machines at rail and subway stations.
- Beijing rail transit has an official foreign-card payment path
- staffed and POS fallback points should stay visible in Beijing transport guidance
- No chinatripready-owned field test or masked card-tap screenshot is attached
- Does not prove every card network, mobile wallet token, or future station path will work
- Does not apply outside Beijing
Do Not Assume
- Do not assume Beijing overseas-card subway support applies nationally.
- Do not rely on English-only place names for taxi, DiDi, or station help.
- Do not make the first airport transfer your first live payment, map, or ride-hailing test.
Source and claim boundaries
Payment touchpoints
Airport or rail arrival
Your wallet, card verification, or data may not work before the first transfer.
Fallback: Use official taxi queues, staffed transport counters, RMB cash, a physical card, or hotel-arranged pickup.
Beijing metro
Official guidance describes overseas-card support in listed subway contexts, but card networks and station paths can still vary.
Fallback: Use a staffed counter, POS path where available, cash/card backup, or official taxi.
Palace Museum or Great Wall day
Bookings, passport checks, return transport, and queues can expose payment or network gaps.
Fallback: Save order details, passport name, Chinese address, and hotel front desk help before leaving.
Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely useful in Beijing, and Beijing's public guidance also covers several transport payment options for international travelers. Still carry backup cash and at least one physical card for airport, hotel, and card-verification edge cases.
Beijing Metro covers most central visitor routes and supports tap-to-ride options for some overseas cards. DiDi is useful for luggage, bad weather, late arrivals, and trips where a Chinese address is easier than station navigation.
Booking risk cards
Public-source verified
Palace Museum passport booking
The Palace Museum can define the whole Beijing day, and passport-linked booking or ticket inventory problems are hard to fix at the gate.
- passport name format
- booking confirmation
- visit date
- Chinese venue name
- hotel return address
- check the official ticket page
- ask hotel front desk for help
- switch to a non-booking-sensitive route
Public-source verified
Great Wall return transport
Great Wall sections sit outside central Beijing, so a casual one-way taxi plan can leave the return path unclear.
- section name in Chinese
- return pickup point
- driver or tour contact
- cash and payment backup
- use official visitor center help
- return by planned bus or arranged transport
- call hotel front desk if stranded
Public-source verified
PEK and PKX airport split
Beijing's two major airports are on different sides of the city, and a wrong airport assumption can break hotel pickup, onward rail, or same-day plans.
- airport code
- terminal
- Chinese airport name
- hotel address
- route screenshot
- ask airport information desk
- use official taxi queue
- contact hotel front desk
City Visual Checks
Use local visuals for orientation, then keep the evidence boundary visible.
These diagrams and source references connect payment, booking, address, and recovery decisions to this city without turning one source into a guarantee.
- Test data and open payment once while official help is nearby.
- Show the Chinese hotel address before choosing taxi, metro, ride-hailing, or hotel pickup.
- Use official taxi queues, metro service centers, airport information desks, or hotel help if payment, pickup, or maps are unstable.
Recovery Action
Choose Beijing staffed transport before one app blocks the first move.
PEK, PKX, metro, official taxis, and ride-hailing all depend on data, payment, Chinese addresses, and nearby staffed help.
Beijing first-move planning across PEK, PKX, metro, official taxi, ride-hailing, and staffed transport help.
- Does not prove live queue time, pickup-zone signage, card acceptance, app account status, or every airport terminal path.
- Does not generalize Beijing metro or taxi details to other China cities.
- Does not replace close-to-travel airport, metro, taxi, hotel, or official city guidance.
- Save the confirmation, visit date, passport name format, and Chinese venue name.
- Carry the passport used for booking and keep a hotel return address card.
- Use the official ticket page or hotel front desk if the booking cannot be confirmed.
Save Preview
Keep passport-linked booking details visible before a Palace Museum day.
Booking-sensitive Beijing days need passport name format, confirmation details, visit date, Chinese venue name, and a return route saved before leaving the hotel.
Beijing booking-risk preparation for Palace Museum and other passport-linked, date-sensitive visits.
- Does not prove ticket inventory, entry gate behavior, passport-name matching, or same-day rule changes.
- Does not replace the current official ticket page or hotel/front-desk help for booking problems.
- Does not apply to every Beijing attraction or Great Wall transport arrangement.

City Recovery Shortcuts
Use Beijing context before the blocker spreads.
Airport or station
Beijing first move is stuck
Use PEK / Beijing Capital International Airport or Beijing South Railway Station with staffed help before you keep troubleshooting at the curb.
- Show the saved Chinese hotel or destination address.
- Switch to official taxi, airport rail, station staff, or hotel pickup.
- Use route screenshots only after data and payment are stable.
Data or maps
Beijing data, map, or translation is unstable
Keep moving with Beijing Capital International Airport, saved screenshots, Wi-Fi, roaming, and staffed help.
- Use airport, station, hotel, mall, or restaurant Wi-Fi for the immediate task.
- Turn on controlled roaming if verification or transport depends on it.
- Show fixed phrases and saved Chinese addresses instead of live search.
Payment point
Beijing checkout or transport payment fails
Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely useful in Beijing, and Beijing's public guidance also covers several transport payment options for international travelers. Still carry backup cash and at least one physical card for airport, hotel, and card-verification edge cases.
- Step aside and check data, wallet prompts, issuer alerts, and limits.
- Switch to the other wallet, another card, RMB cash, or a staffed counter.
- Do not treat one local payment touchpoint as a national payment result.
Hotel or booking
Palace Museum passport booking gets blocked
The Palace Museum can define the whole Beijing day, and passport-linked booking or ticket inventory problems are hard to fix at the gate.
- check the official ticket page
- ask hotel front desk for help
- switch to a non-booking-sensitive route
Arrival Recovery Cards
Save these before your first day in Beijing. Use them when data, payment, transport, hotel check-in, tickets, addresses, or staff communication gets stuck.
Chinese Address Cards
Use verified presets for airports, stations, and major sights. Add your hotel from the hotel, booking platform, official page, or a matching trusted map listing.

What still needs re-checking
- No live PEK-to-hotel or PKX-to-hotel timing test with luggage has been recorded.
- This city guide does not include current screenshots from DiDi, Alipay, WeChat Pay, or Beijing metro payment flows.
- Palace Museum and Great Wall booking advice does not yet include a recent foreign-passport booking walkthrough close to the travel date.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing PEK and PKX when estimating airport transfer time.
- Trying to visit the Palace Museum without checking passport-based booking instructions.
- Using English-only place names with taxi or ride-hailing drivers.
- Underestimating cross-city travel time during commute hours.
- Treating a Great Wall trip like a normal inner-city taxi ride.
FAQ
Which Beijing airport should I choose?
Choose based on flight, hotel location, and transfer time. PEK and PKX serve different sides of the city, so airport choice can change your first-day plan.
Can I use mobile payments in Beijing?
Yes, mobile payments are widely useful, but keep cash and a physical card as backup because app verification and card issuer behavior can vary.
Is the metro practical?
Yes for many central routes. For luggage, late arrivals, or destinations away from metro stations, taxi or DiDi may be easier.
Do I need Chinese addresses?
Yes. Chinese address cards are very helpful for hotels, taxis, ride-hailing pickup, attractions, and emergency communication.
Can I visit the Great Wall independently?
Yes, but choose the section and transport plan in advance and keep a backup return option.
